RPG Game Clock edition – Disgaea 3 – 48:06:29, level 75/9999

In my first edition of RPG Game Clock, I would like to share with you the last game I just finished and talk about my quest to completion. I won’t give you any ratings for the game. If I buy it, I will most certainly like it from the beginning.
Now, let’s focus on the game: Disgaea 3. It is a strategy RPG (or tactical RPG if you prefer) from Nippon Ichi for the Playstation 3. While it is the third opus of the series, I still like the same but improved addictive gameplay.
Read more after the break.
The main hero of the game is Mao, white-haired demon boy who loves playing video games, reading comic books and he is the son of the Overlord on the Netherworld. Mao wish to defeat his dad, the Overlord, by reading and learning how to be a hero. Why? Because, we all know heroes beat the bad guys at the end of the story, right? Anyway, the story is pretty funny although I still believe the first Disgaea is the funniest. Along the quest, you will see a lot of colorful characters in the game and some cameos. I won’t spoil you the secrets but Disgaea 3 is made for fans of the series. If you are new to Disgaea and willing to try the genre, I would strongly suggest to buy the first & the third game and skip the second. Disgaea 2 wasn’t too bad but the story is more serious. After all, part of the charm of the series is the humorous scenes.
So, how was my 48 hours 6 minutes and 29 seconds quest to completion? It was good but a bit easy. I must say that I play through the Item World and Class World for about 40-50% of the time. So, I was a little overpowered. You might wonder what’s the Item World and Class World? Both of these worlds help you level up your items (equipments) and characters. You can finish the game without even touching these parts of the game. However, you will miss the best items for your characters.
Even with most of my time spent on both Worlds, I barely scratch the surface of the possibilities. Can you do everything in one run? I don’t think so. Some things can only be unlocked after the post-game and some other things can be done if you start another run. That’s why I highly recommend you to finish the game first and then, head over to Gamefaqs to unlock secrets or buy the excellent guide from DoubleJump Books for the completists.
After all, you have plenty of things to do in Disgaea 3 and it is excellent for the stats freaks because you can get up to level 9999, attack/receive more than a million of damage and beat bosses with a lot of HP (several millions). Will I be able to get level 9999 someday? I never did with the previous games. My highest was around level 300 after more than 120 hours of gameplay.
In the end, if you like SRPG and incredibly high stats, Disgaea is your reference for the current generation of consoles (and PS2 for that matter). You can finish the game in 25 hours or got crazy & get up to 100 hours easily. As for me, I plan to return to play again in the near future. Right now, we are about to get our feet wet with the upcoming holiday releases and I don’t want to miss any game on my list.
